The crest overlays Sport Lisboa and Grupo Sport Benfica: an open-winged eagle (independence, authority and nobility), a red-and-white parted shield with a football, the initials SLB, and a bicycle wheel — cycling was a founding sport. In the eagle’s claws sits the motto E pluribus unum (“Out of many, one”), tied to the 1908 union of the two clubs. The live mascot eagle is named Vitória.
Founded on 28 February 1904 as Sport Lisboa, the club merged in 1908 with Grupo Sport Benfica and took the name Sport Lisboa e Benfica. It is Portugal’s most successful club by league titles (38) and one of world football’s largest membership bases. European champion in 1961 and 1962, in the era of Béla Guttmann and Eusébio, it has never been relegated from the Primeira Liga, alongside Sporting and Porto. The eagle, the red shirt and the Estádio da Luz — the present ground, opened in 2003 on the site of the 1954 stadium — frame a record of domestic cups, European finals and world-class players developed at the club.
