Crest meaning

The current crest shows a red devil with a trident — the Red Devils nickname, popularised in the Busby era after Salford rugby’s «Les Diables Rouges» — and, in the chief, the ship in full sail from Manchester’s arms, a mark of city trade (the arms predate the Ship Canal). Red, white and gold predominate. «Glory Glory Man United» is a terrace anthem, not an official badge motto.

History

Founded in 1878 in Manchester as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway workers, the club took the name Manchester United in 1902. It was the first English side to win the European Cup (1968) and has three European Cup/Champions League titles (1968, 1999, 2008), plus the 1999 Treble. Twenty English league titles — thirteen of them in the Premier League era — and the 1958 Munich air disaster shape Red Devils memory. Old Trafford has been home since 1910; figures such as Best, Charlton, Law, Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo made the club a global emblem of English football.
