Birkenhead United AFC started as a local answer to a simple need: a team for Auckland to call its own. Founded in 1976, it has had enough time to collect memories, nicknames and small legends. National League — Championship Phase has been the league home for large stretches of their recent history. When Birkenhead United AFC play at Shepherds Park, the stands hold roughly 3,000 — numbers that matter less than the noise the regulars make.
